In honor of World Environment Day (celebrated in June), we’re proud to shine a light on Alma Backyard Farms, a local organization that, like Homeboy, believes in second chances—for people and the planet. Founded by Richard D. Garcia and Erika L. Cuéllar, Alma Backyard Farms transforms unused urban spaces into thriving farms, cultivated by individuals who were formerly incarcerated.
Their work creates meaningful opportunities for reentry through regenerative agriculture and community healing—reminding us that soil, like people, has the power to recover and thrive with the right care.
“I think unlocking the potential of people, plants and place reverses condemnation because it speaks to the future—that something new is just around the corner.” — Richard D. Garcia, Co-Founder / Executive Director
“When we put our hands in the soil, bare hands, no gloves, there’s an exchange that happens, there’s a communication, and if one is willing to receive it, it can be transformative.” — Erika L. Cuéllar, Operations Director & Co-Founder
At Homeboy, we know that transformation happens when dignity, purpose, and sustainability come together. Alma Backyard Farms is cultivating all three—one garden bed, one person, one harvest at a time.

Only 20% of e-waste is documented as properly collected and recycled worldwide (UN).
In 2022, over 5.3 billion mobile phones were discarded globally (WEEE Forum).
The U.S. is one of the top e-waste producers, tossing around 9.4 million tons each year.
In honor of World Environment Day, we invite you to take action by hosting an e-waste collection event with Homeboy Electronics Recycling. These events are a simple and impactful way to reduce pollution, protect the environment, and engage your community or team in a mission that matters.
Collection events are a great way to: ✔ Give people a responsible and affordable way to dispose of electronics ✔ Boost your organization’s ESG and sustainability goals ✔ Raise awareness around e-waste and environmental justice ✔ Build community around World Environment Day—or your next green milestone!
